Our Story
The Oya Abeo Story
Founded by Samiat Salami and inspired by her childhood in Lagos, Oya Abeo draws from centuries-old Nigerian textile traditions to create modern whimsical and artful handprinted textiles that celebrate the colors, textures, and landscape of Nigeria. Our prints are created digitally in our studio in Lagos, Nigeria before they are hand-drawn and hand-dyed by Batik Artists. Our culture is a never-ending source of inspiration for our prints. We love bright, happy colors that capture the tropical flora and fauna of Western Nigeria. The earthy textures of the North and the geometric shapes in the East.As Nigerians, we descend from a long line of people who will take any chance to dance and jaiyé (celebrate life), and we take this ethos into our work. Oya Abeo is a festive celebration of daily life explored through loungewear and home textiles that simplify and elevate daily existence.
Our Craftsmanship
We journey around Nigeria to bring you the best materials and craftsmanship. Beginning with our 100% Nigerian cotton fabric, grown in Funtua, Katsina. Then we collaborate with artisans in Osogbo who elegantly draw our prints and patterns before the fabric is intricately dyed. Our hand-woven fabric comes to us from Iseyin, where incredibly skilled artisans whose knowledge of weaving has been passed from generation to generation, hand-loom silk threads to create luxurious results.
Our Designs
We are not only for lovers of the Afrocentric. Our products are designed to complement a variety of spaces from modern to bohemian, industrial and beyond. Our one-of-a-kind prints are inspired by Nigerian culture, flora, fauna and landscape. Learn more about our prints here
